An Interactive Creative Director in New York City

Visual Sign Universe

The Visual Sign Universe (VSU) was a response to a commission from the advertising agency DDB España to enhance their Sign Bank: an analytical tool that monitors social trends and groups them in terms of various categories (Wellbeing, Values, Tension, Technology, Youth, Heroes...)

The VSU fulfils a dual function: first, it facilitates the analytical work of planners and copywriters in identifying and classifying new trends that affect society and its forms of consumption, and second, it is a powerful tool of communication between the agency and its clients, useful for explaining the creative process, or part of it, from the idea through to its connection with social trends.

arc90 lab : experiments : Readability

Mandy Brown a contributor to one of my favorite reads on the web “A List Apart” wrote an article titled "In Defense Of Readers." It's an attempt to awaken designer’s responsibility to those who read on the Web:

Despite the ubiquity of reading on the web, readers remain a neglected audience. Much of our talk about web design revolves around a sense of movement: users are thought to be finding, searching, skimming, looking. We measure how frequently they click but not how long they stay on the page. We concern ourselves with their travel and participation--how they move from page to page, who they talk to when they get there--but forget the needs of those whose purpose is to be still. Readers flourish when they have space--some distance from the hubbub of the crowds--and as web designers, there is yet much we can do to help them carve out that space.

In response to the readability issue the folks at lab.arc90.com developed a solution appropriately named Readability…

Delaunay Raster by Dutch designer Jonathan Puckey

Jonathan Puckey is a Dutch graphic designer who can script. He often uses Scriptographer, a scripting plugin for Adobe Illustrator, so that’s probably why he calls his work ‘conditional design’. ‘Delaunay Raster’ is his latest project, it’s image vectorization based on Delaunay triangulation. So on the left you can recognize Kate Moss and on the right Notorious BIG. But if you want to understand why this is so amazing, you’ll have to go to his website and watch the short demo video. Check it out: http://www.jonathanpuckey.com/projects/delaunay-raster/
